As lava rocks retain heat they also help maintain even cooking temperatures ultimately saving you on gas.
Depending on grill use, lava stones need to be replaced about once a year as grease and food drippings saturate the surfaces and begin to smoke more and lose their ability to retain and maintain heat.
WARNING: Lava rocks retain heat for a long time, do not attempt to move a grill or remove stones until completely cooled down.
